During the first quarter of 2026, Cedar Ridge Center had the highest resident count among Somerset County nursing homes, according to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).

The facility offered 75 available beds, which is 24 more than Somerset County’s average in early 2026. Cedar Ridge Center served an average of 69.3 residents each day during that period.

The CMS gave Cedar Ridge Center an overall rating of 2 out of 5, lower than the 2.9 average for Maine nursing homes.

Maplecrest Rehab & Living Center ranked as the second largest local facility, providing 58 beds, while Woodlawn Rehabilitation and Nursing Center placed third with 46 beds available.

Cedar Ridge Center reported no fines or penalties in the first quarter of 2026.

Altogether, Somerset County, Maine, counted four for-profit nursing homes.

According to U.S. Census Bureau estimates, the population of older adults in the United States is increasing as numbers among younger groups decline. Between 2020 and 2024, Americans age 65 and older grew by 13%, while those under 18 dropped by 1.7%. Over the last century, the country’s older population has expanded significantly, rising from 4.9 million in 1920 to more than 61 million by 2024.

A 2021 study indicates nearly half of the older adult population, about 28 million people, may require long-term services and supports. The study also estimates that more than one-third could eventually need care in a nursing home.

“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, an insurance education organization. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
