U.S. Senator Susan Collins was presented with the Justice Award from the American Bar Association on Apr. 2, recognizing her national impact on the justice system and her efforts to preserve the rule of law through support for judicial independence and reform. Rachel Okun of Falmouth, President of the Maine State Bar Association, presented the award in Washington, D.C.

The Justice Award honors individuals who contribute significantly to maintaining a fair justice system or increasing public awareness about legal processes. Collins received this recognition specifically for her advocacy of funding for the Legal Services Corporation, a nonprofit that provides civil legal assistance to low-income Americans.

“The American Bar Association sets high standards for our justice system and highlights the importance of equal access to legal services throughout our country,” said Senator Collins. “I am honored to receive this recognition and will continue working hard to secure funding that supports important efforts to provide legal assistance to low-income individuals.”

Last year, there was a proposal in the President’s budget to eliminate all funding for the Legal Services Corporation; however, Collins secured $540 million in recently enacted appropriations legislation for its continued operations.

Collins draws from experience in a family lumber business with a tradition of public service according to her official website. She also promotes environmental protection linked closely with Maine’s economy by supporting sustainable practices across tourism, recreation, forestry, fishing and agriculture according to her official website. In addition, she seeks improvements in health care access, small business development, job opportunities, education advancement and transportation infrastructure according to her official website.

As chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee and member of other key committees including Health, Education, Labor and Pensions as well as Intelligence according to her official website, Collins secures resources for Maine’s local industries such as shipbuilding and manufacturing according to her official website. She also works on initiatives aimed at enhancing first responder capabilities and improving cybersecurity according to her official website.

Looking ahead, observers note that Senator Collins continues focusing on advancing health care access and economic opportunities while championing environmental protections tailored toward supporting Maine’s communities according to her official website.
