UMA honors Juneteenth, a holiday observed in the United States that observes the freedom of all enslaved people in 1865.
Juneteenth is a combination of the words “June” and “Nineteenth”. It is also referred to as Emancipation Day or Freedom Day.
On June 19th, 1865, federal soldiers reached Galveston, TX to take control of the state and confirm that all enslaved people were free. It wasn’t until two years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation that soldiers arrived in the city.
The University is closed today in observance of the holiday.
