Colby College to Split Men's and Women's Tennis Coaching Responsibilities

Colby Athletics recently made the move to split its men's and women's tennis head coaching positions, Vice President and Harold Alfond Director of Athletics Mike Wisecup announced today.

With the announcement, the current head coach of both programs Adam Reeb, who just completed his fourth season at the helm, will continue as the head of the men's program. The College has begun a national search for the head coach of the women's program.  Until a women's coach is hired, Reeb will continue to support both programs.

"This is a great day for Colby Tennis," said Wisecup.  "Over the last four years under Coach Reeb's leadership, both programs have demonstrated significant competitive improvement.  By supporting each program with a dedicated head coach, we will continue that upward trajectory and I am confident it will create the conditions for our teams to become perennial championship programs."

With the move to support the men's and women's programs with separate head coaches, Colby becomes the seventh NESCAC institution to make the change.  The most recent was Hamilton in 2019.

"I am very excited for this development and grateful to our administration to invest in our student-athletes and programs this way," said Reeb.  "Both teams have done very well the past few years and this move continues the evolution of Colby Tennis and aligns us with the top teams in Division III."

Both tennis programs have found significant success under Reeb's guidance.  The men's team recorded its highest ITA ranking (24th) in program history after an undefeated 2022 spring trip that saw the Mules defeat top-20 opponents Redlands and Caltech.  The women's team also raised its ranking (26th) after defeating Occidental and #22 Caltech the same week.  The recruiting classes for the women's team over the last three years have ranked (ITA) amongst the best in the country.

Individually, both programs have recently reached incredible heights.  This past spring, graduating senior Carly Levitz was honored by the athletic department earning the Marjorie D. Bither Award, presented to a female student athlete for academic and athletic ability, and leadership in athletics and on campus.  In 2021, Jan Wenger from the men's team and Levitz from the women's team qualified for NCAA Division III Championships, with Levitz advancing to the Sweet 16 to earn All-American status.  In 2020, Scott Altmeyer earned ITA Northeast Senior Player of the Year, raising his national ranking to No. 10 and earning All-American recognition.

"Every tennis student-athlete will benefit immensely from having a head coach dedicated fully to their program," continued Reeb.  "This is a momentous time for Colby Tennis and I am excited to see the programs reach new heights in the coming years."
