The Colby Women's Basketball team opened their season Saturday hosting the Rivier University Raiders. The Mules earned a 69-56 victory to start off the 2022-23 campaign 1-0.
Rivier jumped out early, building a 20-13 lead after the first frame. Colby was able to pull back in front before halftime behind 10 second quarter points by Caroline Smith, with eight of those collected at the free throw line, taking a 36-30 lead at the break. The Raiders won the third quarter, leveling the score at 46 apiece heading into the final frame. Seven different Mules netted hoops in the fourth quarter, led by Smith with eight and Carter McGloon with five, as Colby ran away with the victory down the stretch.
Smith led the way with 24 points, nine rebounds, and seven assists for Colby. She went 12-13 from the free throw line. McGloon scored 15 points, and Bray Hunter was next in line with eight. Six different Mules tallied their first collegiate points for Colby (Lauren Cho, Chelsea Ibenegbu, Lili Nagy, Gabrielle Hemenes, Mackenzie Younker, and Lydia Mordarski).
Colby is back in action next weekend hosting the Colby Tip-Off Classic against New England College and Colby-Sawyer.
