Saint Joseph's College (19-5, 14-2 GNAC) toppled Regis College (11-12, 11-6 GNAC), 76-48, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's basketball contest at the Harold Alfond Center on Tuesday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The conference rivals faced a 12-12 stalemate after an uneven first quarter, but the Monks started the second period with a 17-5 run, which was capped by a Jayne Howe (Pembroke, Mass.) jumper with 2:19 before the break, and held a 34-21 advantage heading into halftime.
As it played out, St. Joe's maintained at least an eight-point lead for the remainder of the contest and, after netting 16 unanswered points as part of a 21-2 outbreak, claimed a game-high 34-point (74-40) lead when freshman guard Elisabeth Stapelfeld (Brookline, N.H.) converted a fast-break layup with 3:03 left.
STATS OF THE GAME:
The Monks shot 49.2% (31-63) from the field while the Pride posted a 34.5% (20-58) effort from the floor…Saint Joseph's held a 26-15 lead in points off turnovers with a 21-8 advantage in bench points.
LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:
- Junior guard Hannah Talon (Windham, Maine) led four SJC players in double digits with 14 points and added nine rebounds with four assists
- Junior guard Angelica Hurley (Groveland, Mass.) registered a double-double with 13 points and 10 boards along with four assists and a pair of steals
- Stapelfeld netted 12 points with three steals and two assists
- Junior guard Hailey Anderson (Beverly, Mass.) added 10 points with two assists, two steals, and a pair of blocked shots
- Junior guard Nina Howe (York, Maine) chipped in with nine points, six assists, three steals, and two rebounds
- Freshman forward Madi Zancan (Cumberland, R.I.) paced the Pride with 15 points on 7-for-11 shooting and pulled down six rebounds with four blocked shots and a pair of steals
- Senior guard Pam Gonzalez (Revere, Mass.) scored nine points and pulled down seven boards with three steals
- Senior forward Olivia Pacheco (Waterford, Conn.) came off the bench to net contribute six points and five rebounds in 13 minutes
With the victory Saint Joseph's improves to 7-1 all-time versus Regis College and has now defeated the Pride in seven-consecutive meetings.
