CMS assigned Waterville Center for Health and Rehab an overall rating of 2 out of 5, which is below the Maine statewide average of 2.9 for nursing homes.

For the quarter, Mainegeneral Rehab & Long Term Care – Glenridge held the top spot by bed count in Kennebec County, offering 125 beds, while Maine Veterans Home – Augusta was third with 108 beds.

U.S. Census Bureau estimates indicate that the nation’s older adult population continues to rise while younger age brackets shrink. From 2020 to 2024, individuals age 65 and older grew by 13%, as the under-18 population declined by 1.7%. Over the past century, America’s older adult population has surged from 4.9 million in 1920 to more than 61 million by 2024.

A 2021 study finds nearly half of those aged 65 and older—about 28 million—could require long-term services and supports, with over one third potentially needing future nursing home care.

“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, an insurance information group. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
