On July 8, 2021, Deputy Chelsea Merry and Deputy Ian Shalit responded to a motor vehicle crash in Madison. When they arrived, they learned the driver had suffered a medical event causing the crash. He was unresponsive and not breathing. Deputy Shalit began CPR and Deputy Merry retrieved her AED and shocked his heart twice. Due to their efforts, the driver began to breathe on his own and was transported to Redington-Fairview General Hospital where he recovered. I had the pleasure of presenting Deputy Merry and Deputy Shalit with Life Saving Awards at the Deputies annual gathering in June. A life was saved because of the quick actions of Deputy Shalit and Deputy Merry. Sheriff Lancaster
