Colby College Men's Soccer Opens 2022 with Victory in Elm City Bowl

The Colby College Men's Soccer team opened the season with a 2-0 victory over cross-town rival Thomas College.

On a night full of energy from both benches as well as the crowd (roughly 370  in attendance), the Mules tallied a score in each half.  In the 20th minute of the contest, Jared Wood scored his second goal of his career.  Colin Sullivan played the ball into the box, where Wood slid past the defense to connect with the header.  In the second half, Nicholas Lemire crossed a lofted ball, and Colby's leading scorer from 2021 Josh Rubin headed it over the outstretched keeper.  Brandon McCarthy posted the third shutout of his career, turning away the only shot on goal he faced.

"What an enjoyable team performance for all the fans in the stands," said head coach Ewan Seabrook. "We brought an effort and intensity level that we want to be the benchmark in every game. As a derby, we were well aware of how much this game means to Thomas and our upperclassmen made it a point this week that we had to be first to every tackle, interception, and second ball."

"The front three of Justin Lauer, Mario Simoes, and Chase Dolinko were energetic from the start and didn't allow our opponent any breathing room on or off the ball," continued Seabrook. "Those three were excellent, and then when Ethan Franco, Ethan Fabricant, and Luis Estrella replaced them in the first half, it almost went up another gear. For us as a coaching staff, it was satisfying to see so many guys come into the game, know their role, and raise the level. Credit needs to go to the super senior class of Pugh, Lemire, Donahue, Wood, Fabricant, Seaman, Sullivan, and Morin for setting the tempo and focus in training through pre-season camp."

Colby opens NESCAC play Saturday when they travel to Middletown, Conn. to take on Wesleyan University.
