Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) women’s basketball suffered a 53-40 loss at rival Central Maine Community College (CMCC) on Wednesday, Feb. 15.
The Seawolves took off strong, leading in the first quarter and only trailing by two points after the second. However, their offense was held to single digits in both the third and fourth quarters to allow the home team to pull away.
Junior captain Ashleigh Mathisen (Portland, Maine) scored 12 points—the only one to score in the double digits. She added three assists and two steals in 38 minutes of work.
CMCC’s Luna Love and Emily Strachan each scored 14 points for the Mustangs.
When asked about the game, Head Coach Katie Stannard commented, “We strung together three great quarters but that's not enough! I was proud of their ability to compete and excited to get back to practice and get better before Senior Day!”
SMCC drops their second straight game to sport a 17-7 record, 10-3 in conference play.
The Seawolves will host the Knights from Vermont Technical College on Saturday, Feb. 18 in both teams’ regular season finale. Tip-off at The HUB is set for 1:00 p.m. Before, Coach Stannard and the Athletics Department will honor four graduating players for their leadership and dedication to the program—Ashleigh Mathisen, Tara Flanders, Bailey Whitney, and Aija Andrews.
